Partition type: Win95LBA - File system type: ext2,3 or4. Type of filesystem: from ntfs to ext2,3 or 4?Īttention to consistency between partition type and file system type. Partition type: basic data partition for native linux? edit the existing partition and or format it with another filesystem? For example: delete the media and do new partitioning?Ĭonsider that MBR partitioning in theory can only see media up to 2 TB, GPT in theory can see media up to 256 TB. The characteristics of the first partition, on the left, are not shown in the picture. a basic data partition with EXFAT file system. Something else may have caused this, if indeed it did. Simple partitioning/formatting software does not destroy the physical media of a device. I want to make this thing my Primary Backup storage device, simply because it is so small and easy to carry with me. People say we should support local vendors and I would agree except so few of them ever have what I need. I live in a megalopolis but shopping here is like shopping in a tiny backwoods town with a closed general store. I never even go to their website anymore. I used to do a lot of business with Newegg but, after they were sold to a Chinese company, their customer service plummeted and they started relying more heavily on Market Place vendors, all of whom were dodgy, instead of maintaining their own stock. It get most of my electronics, such as drives from Amazon (first choice although I avoid their Market Place vendors) or B&H Photo Video. If you want to have the drive accessible to both Linux and Windwoes, then either NTFS or exFAT should be used (in which case it would be wise to have another backup drive formatted to ext4 in case the first backup drive gets borked in any case, two backup drives, with one kept offsite, are highly recommended). What do you want to format the drive to? If using only Linux to access the drive, ext4 will be best. Walmart is there of course, but I quit going inside that co-mingled mass of humanity 2 years ago add in the Fuel Costs today, that 2 hour trip costs me 2 gallons of fuel, at $4.69/gallon. It is a two hour trip to town and back, and there is only the 'Best Buy' store there, and they are not price competitive. That was what got me excited when I saw this one show up on Amazon.Īmazon is my defacto standard place to order things. My current backup drives are humongous beasts, 7 inches tall, spinning HDDs and slow as mud in February. I have my best luck with gparted in the past, will stick with that. I tried to put FAT on it, and it kept saying it would take 8 days and X hours.įAT can't handle 8TB, it was a very dumb move on my part. I totally messed up the USB interface, and I now remember how that occurred. What do mean by it becoming a piece of junk? It wouldn't mount? Couldn't write to it? What were the steps you used when trying to format it with GParted? Once I learned how, I never had a problem formatting a disk with GParted.
